The North Island Age Group Championship concluded today in a tense final round at Hamilton Golf Club and Riverside Golf Club, where four new champions were found in the respective divisions.

Mirimar’s Sam Marsters won the u19 division by two shots at one-over par. He shot rounds of 71, 72, and 74 to hold off Zachary May; whom he shared the lead with at the beginning of the day.

Marsters got off to an unfavourable start to begin the final day, opening with consecutive bogeys and found himself three-over after six holes. The wellington golfer managed to keep his composure and found birdies at the eighth and ninth to make the turn in one-over.

He gave a shot right back at the par 5 10th but played his final holes in even-par to seal a two-shot victory.

In the North Island Girls u19 division, Angela Ju had got the new decade off to an ideal start also sealing a two-stroke victory over the in-form Tara Raj.

Ju shot consistent rounds of 69, 69, and 69 to finish at 12-under for the event. She was clinical in the final round making five birdies with the lone bogey on the opening hole to cruise to victory.

Ju burst on the scene in 2019, featuring in the final two Jennian Homes Charles Tour events of the year at the Carrus Open and the Christies Floorings Mount Open. She’s started 2020 off in perfect fashion and is poised to feature in many more tournaments this year.

The North Island Boys u16 division was claimed by Feilding’s Ryan Rooney by an impressive four-strokes. He carded rounds of 76, 71, and 68 to hold off Robby Turnbull.

Rooney got out of the gates quickly with birdies at the third, fifth, seventh, and ninth to make the turn in four-under par. All he needed to do in the final nine was avoid disaster and the trophy was his.

Rooney managed to do just that shooting even-par coming home, claiming the biggest scalp of his young career.

Finally, in the North Island Girls u16’s, Taehui Park has etched her name at the top of the leader board with rounds of 68, 70, and 72 to finish at nine-under for the event.

Park finished two shots clear for Takapuna’s Danika Lee.

She got off to a hot start and was quickly two-under after four holes. Like Rooney, she just needed to finish strongly, and the tournament was hers.

The Pupuke golfer played the next 14 holes in one-over to claim the North Island u16 Girls Championship.
