James Anstiss has added his name to the Jennian Homes Trophy after being the top performer in Jennian Homes Charles Tour events in 2019.

Anstiss finished 100 points ahead of Luke Toomey who had the opportunity to surpass the leader with a three-way tie for second or better at the season-ending Christies Floorings Mount Open last week. Anstiss did not tee it up in the event as he was away in Australia preparing for the Australian PGA Championship which got underway yesterday.

With Toomey finishing in sixth place, the trophy was awarded to Anstiss who finished with wins at the Autex Muriwai Open and Harewood Open, along with a fourth-place finish at the Barfoot and Thompson Akarana Open, 11th at the DVS Pegasus Open.

Anstiss says he’s thrilled to be the winner of the season-long trophy.

“It’s a great feeling getting my name on this trophy. The Jennian Homes Charles Tour events are the pinnacle events on the New Zealand Golf and New Zealand PGA calendar so it’s an honour to be recognised as the top performer this year.

“The opportunities the Jennian Homes Charles Tour provide for us are fantastic. We get to experience the highs and lows, pressures and excitement of four-round tournament golf in our own backyard against the top professionals in New Zealand.

“These experiences prepare us well for overseas tours and these events have certainly helped propel my career,” Anstiss says.

The Otago professional had a nervous wait to see if he would be crowned the season-long best performer. Bay of Plenty professional Luke Toomey had a fast finish to his season with back-to-back wins at the DVS Pegasus Open and the Carrus Open to put himself in title contention with one event to spare.

“It was a strange feeling not being in control of your own destiny. Toomey has been playing great throughout the year and would have been more than a deserving champion. Thankfully I got over the line.”
