Wellington have retained their spot atop the 2019 Freyberg Masters leader board at Timaru Golf Club for another day.

The men from the capital city have dispatched of a tough North Harbour outfit 3.5 points to 1.5 and sit on top with four points and 16.5 game points. They’ll need their winning ways to continue as they’ve had a loss and are yet to have their bye, with a host of teams behind them snapping at their heels.

One of those teams looming closely behind in second place is an unbeaten Bay of Plenty. They also sit on four competition points but trail on game points on 13.5 with a game in hand. They got passed Southland in a closely fought contest.

The last two unbeaten sides faced off against each other this morning and are both still unbeaten.

Canterbury and Auckland squared off in an all-important blockbuster this morning, with neither team able to be separated. They have a 2.5-point tie after Auckland number five Gareth Chitty drained a 20-foot putt on the final hole to escape with a half.

They are left in third and fourth place respectively.

With the latter rounds of the tournament set to commence tomorrow, we can expect some movement up the top of the leader board.

Can Wellington hold off the challengers to setup a showdown with the most successful team in the events history Auckland in the last round?

Play gets underway tomorrow morning, with 36-holes to be played on the final two days.
