HANDFUL OF TEAMS REMAIN IN CONTENTION AT FREYBERG MASTERS

5/11/2019

Wellington sit atop a packed leader board at the halfway stage at the Freyburg Masters at Timaru Golf Club.

Only game points separate five teams, four of which are unbeaten through the opening four rounds of the tournament.

It’s the men from the capital city who are in front by the smallest of margins at a Timaru Golf Club which is showing its teeth with narrow fairways and thick rough. They lead Canterbury, Manawatu Wanganui, Bay of Plenty, and the most prolific winner of this title, Auckland.

Wellington have beaten Northland, Poverty Bay EC, and Taranaki. However, they’re yet to have their bye and have also had a loss to Waikato. They’re on three wins with a game point total of 13 to hold a slim lead over the men from the garden city.

Canterbury have already got the better of Waikato in the first round, followed by Otago, and North Harbour in rounds three and four, and have already had their bye in the second round. They currently sit on three points as well but have one less game point than the leaders.

Manawatu Wanganui are also lurking as an unbeaten threat for the tournament. They’ve won three games on the trot after having a bye in their opening round.

Bay of Plenty and Auckland are also undefeated through the first four rounds of the event.

There’s plenty of movement yet to be had on the leader board, with Wellington’s spot on top in danger if the other unbeaten teams keep winning.

Round 5 gets underway tomorrow morning.
