JONES AND XU WIN THE NORTH ISLAND STROKEPLAY

26/09/2019

Sam Jones has won the North Island Strokeplay and Bay of Plenty Open by five shots, claiming his maiden national title.

Jones fired rounds 72, 67, 69, and 67 around Whakatane Golf Club to finish at five-under par for the event and held off challenges from James Fellows-Ford and defending champion Matt McLean.

Trailing Jimmy Zheng by a single stroke going into the final day, Jones put on a clinic in the final two rounds to take control of the tournament. He made birdies on the ninth and 10th and added another at the 17th to all but sew up the title.

He now adds his name next to the likes of Ryan Fox and Daniel Pearce.

Fiona Xu has also taken the women’s North Island Strokeplay in convincing fashion, claiming the trophy by three strokes over Darae Chung.

Xu got her revenge after losing to Chung at the North Island Age Groups by a single stroke just a few weeks ago. She shot rounds of 65, 68, 71, and 71 to finish at nine-under par for the championship.
