PREVIEWING YOUR NORTH ISLAND STROKEPLAY CHAMPIONSHIPS

19/09/2019

The North Island Strokeplay Championship boasts an impressive field once again as players compete for two separate trophies.

Both the North Island Strokeplay and BOP Open trophies are on the line at Whakatane Golf Club this weekend and defending champion Matt McLean is keen to keep his hands on the silverware.

McLean ran away with the tournaments in 2018 winning by nine shots at 12-under for the tournament.

He’ll be up against some stiff competition if he’s to retain his titles. The in-form Jordan Woodall will be one to look out for, as he’s coming off a 2nd place finish at the Queensland Strokeplay just a few weeks ago.

Mako Thompson is also one to keep your eye on as he’s been showcasing his impressive golfing ability with two wins already this year at the Cambridge Classic and the Kapi Tareha in August.

Other notables in the field are reigning New Zealand Amateur champion Charlie Smail, Jimmy Zheng, and former professional turned amateur, Tyler Hodge.

The women’s side of proceedings will also host a hot-list of contenders for the North Island Women’s Strokeplay and the Women’s BOP Open.

Like McLean, defending champion Brittney Dryland returns to the scene of her success in 2018. She captured both trophies in an impressive five stroke victory at seven-under par.

She will also have to beat some in form players such as last year’s runner-up Darae Chung. Chung has most recently captured the New Zealand Age Groups Championship and will be looking to go one place better at this year’s events.

Fiona Xu is also one to keep your eyes on as she led the New Zealand Age Groups for most of the event before Chung took control with just two holes to play.

The tournament is 72 holes of strokeplay played over three days from Friday 19 September – Sunday 22 September. The cut will be made after 36 holes with the final two rounds to be played on Sunday.
