NZ Under 13 - Playing Update

Following a detailed review and careful consideration, New Zealand Golf has decided to no longer hold national U13 championships.

We know that the youth are the future of our game, and as such know our role is to grow their love for golf over time. We want them to become lifelong participants, so to do this we must consider their needs and not those of adults. The full reasons outlining our decision can be viewed here.

It was felt that including a U13 category at the New Zealand Age Group Championship was not in line with this approach which is why we removed the U13 component of our national age group championship, to allow the focus of play and competition at this age and stage of development to be based at the club, hub and interclub level and within the Young Masters phase of the LOVE Golf Futures Programme, or other such junior programmes that focus on development and play over winning.

Since making this decision it has been made apparent to New Zealand Golf from communication that we have received, that firstly some U13 players still wish to compete and may play in the U19 Championship at the Cromwell Golf Club and secondly that some families have also booked flights and accommodation to Queenstown.

While some players may be at an age and stage where they will be able to enjoy playing against much older players on the Cromwell course that will measure in excess of 6000m, the majority of the players who were intending to play in the U13 national championship will not. As a result New Zealand Golf will be offering those players who have booked accommodation and flights or those who don’t want to compete at Cromwell, a fun and enjoyable playing opportunity at Millbrook over the same dates.

Players will be able to have a practice round on Tuesday and will complete three rounds of stableford on a course measuring approximately 5000m. The players playing at Millbrook will also enjoy the practice round and three rounds of golf as they will not have to make the cut to play on Friday like they would have to if they were playing at Cromwell in the U19 National Championship.

For those players who wish to take up this playing opportunity they do not need to enter online, instead please email
