NEW ZEALAND AMATEUR CHAMPION WINS HAREWOOD OPEN

25/10/2015

Daniel Hillier has become the youngest male player in history to win on the Jennian Homes Charles Tour.

“Wow, what a week! I’m over the moon, it’s been an amazing experience,” said Hillier trying to hide his beaming smile.

Hillier played with absolute class on the final day carding a four under par 68 to win the Championship. Following his victory at the New Zealand Amateur and the National age group champs, winning the John Jones Steel Harewood Open is easily a career highlight for the 17 year old.

“I never thought I would be standing here as the winner this week, it just shows in golf anything can happen.”

It didn’t come without stress as he made a double bogey on 13 which changed the leaderboard dramatically to then have a three-way tie for the lead alongside the experienced duo Jim Cusdin and Martin Pettigrew.

Finishing outright second Jim Cusdin put continued pressure on Hillier. With six birdies on the front nine he was well on track.

However he was too inconsistent throughout, making a painful double bogey on 16 followed by a holing out for eagle on 17, to then top it all off by binning a birdie on 18 as he just fell short.

“Looking at the scoreboards I saw that Jim was playing well and felt him coming,” said Hiller

“I was feeling good as well and managed to keep it together coming down the stretch with the support of my caddy, Springy.”

Hillier of Manor Park Golf Club responded to Cusdin in style draining three birdies in the last five holes to shut out his challenger.

“My double on the 13th came out of nowhere, I was playing solid up until then, but to finish the way I did after that was the best part of it without a doubt.”

Post winning the New Zealand Amateur and the National Age Group Championship the emotions were similar as he added another trophy to his quickly growing cabinet.

“It’s definitely right up there with my two wins earlier in the year, certainly my best stroke play victory but hopefully I can keep tracking the way I am and do it again in the near future.”

“Next for me is more overseas experience as I look to target more tournaments in Australia.”

Sir Bob Charles was on course to watch the drama unfold and enjoyed what he saw from the new champion.

“It’s great to see the young talent in New Zealand playing well on the Tour,” said Sir Bob

“I watched young Daniel through the back nine and he had a bit of a slip up on 13, but to regather with three birdies after that was very impressive.”

“It’s great to see another successful tournament and with the great support of Jennian Homes, long may it continue.”

Speaking of young talent, Chantelle Cassidy has successfully defended her title by a dominant eight shots showing that she simply loves playing at The Harewood Golf Club.

Winning by thirteen shots in her 2014 victory defending the trophy seemed to be no fluke as she continues to grow as a player.

Cassidy did what she expected of herself and any player in her position carding a very solid even par round which as the 54 hole leader is never easy.

“I’m really happy with how I played today. I stuck to the game plan and a couple of nice up and downs helped me along the way.”

She will be looking to continue her form as she enters the remaining two events in 2015.

“Next I have the Dunes Medal in Melbourne in November and then the Interprovincials at the end of the year.”
