TOP SEEDS SAFELY THROUGH

17/04/2015

Tae Koh (Manukau Golf Club) and Alanna Campbell (Omanu Golf Club) safely navigated their first two rounds of match play to reach the quarter finals of the New Zealand Amateur Championship at the Titirangi Golf Club today.

Koh had two comfortable victories today taking care of Leonard Powell 3&2 and Duncan Croudis 4&3. He will however face an inform Vaughan McCall (Gore Golf Club) in a mouth watering quarter final tomorrow morning. Since being delayed flying up from the deep south on Monday, resulting in no practice rounds and struggling with an opening round 75, things have clicked for McCall. He fired the round of the tournament, a 65 in the second qualifying round and easily dispatched Cameron Grant and Mason Lee today. Both players were unable to take McCall any more than 14 holes.

On the bottom half of the draw Josh Munn was in fine form during the days play and came through two tough matches with flying colours. Munn first had to take care of Canadian Amateur Champion James Beale and then his Manawatu Wanganui team mate Lachie McDonald in the afternoon. Munn will face Australian visitor Dale Williamson tomorrow. Williamson has been impressive since arriving finished tied 2nd in the qualifying rounds, following that with comfortable wins over Fletcher Broderick and Peter Spearman-Burn.

In the match and upset of the day, young Daniel Hiller who recently claimed third place at the Australian Boys Championship, rallied against the inform Ryan Chisnall. Finding himself three down with four to play, Hillier showed nerves of a veteran to reel off four birdies to win each of the last four holes and claim a memorable 1up victory.

In the women’s championship Alanna Campbell also advanced as the number one seed in the women’s draw and was made to work hard, being taken to the 17th hole by Jamie Bellingham and then the 18th in the afternoon by Julianna Hung. Campbell will line up in her quarter final against Ela Grimwood (Gulf Harbour Country Club) and will play the winner of Chantelle Cassidy (Tokoroa Golf Club) and Muchin Keh (Titirangi Golf Cub).

The quarter final between Cassidy, the defending champion, and Keh the 2012 champion, looks to be the battle of the quarter finals in the women’s draw and one which could go either way. Cassidy performed well on the opening day of match play and was impressive in the afternoon, easily defeating 12 year old Bohyun Park in what loomed as a close contest. In the end it wasn’t with Cassidy winning 4&3. While Keh won both her matches she was pushed hard in the morning by young Emma Lee Morrell in the morning. Morrell can be proud of the way she pushed the New Zealand rep all the way to the 17th hole. In the afternoon Keh battled fellow local club member Brittany Dryland in a match which was a lot closer than the 3&2 result suggested.

On the bottom of the draw, favourites Julianne Alvarez and Wenyung Keh appear to be on a collision course for the other semi final after comfortable wins on day one. They will however have tough match ups early tomorrow morning with Brooke Hamilton and Momoka Kobori looking to ensure that they don’t have an easy path through to the semi final.

With some exciting match ups early tomorrow and semi finals tomorrow afternoon, there will be four deserving finalists on Saturday evening.
