TWO AT THE TOP IN THE NEW ZEALAND WOMEN'S STROKE PLAY

Julianne Alvarez (Manor Park) and Wenyung Keh (Pakuranga Golf Club) will head into tomorrow’s final round tied for the lead in the New Zealand Womens Stroke Play Championship at the Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club.

The two New Zealand Reps have a three shot lead over a pair of Japanese visitors with Wenyung’s older sister Munchin the only other player with a realistic chance to take home the silverware tomorrow.

Alvarez, the overnight leader had an up and down day with bogeys at the 1st, 5th and 11th holding her back from forging a solid lead. Fortunately for Alvarez, despite the bogeys her aggressive play yielded birdies on the 4th, 6th, 7th, 12th and 13th, which was enough to keep her nose in front of the charging Wenyung Keh. When Alvarez bogeyed the 15th and 16th she handed the lead to Keh for the first time since the start of the championship. Alvarez however fought back and her rollercoaster round continued with birdies on her final two holes to grab back a share of the lead and ensure an exciting battle tomorrow.

Keh, who won last week at the Lawnmaster Classic had a more consistent round only dropping the solitary shot at the 5th hole. Birdies at the 4th, 6th, 12th 13th and 18th saw Keh sign for the round of the day, along with her sister Munchin, a four under par 70.

Looking to make sure that tomorrow’s final round won’t become a two horse race were Japanese visitors Nasa Hataoka and Minami Katsu. Hataoka lies at two under par for the tournament after an even par round today, but all eyes will be on the defending champion Katsu, who looks to be the biggest danger to the kiwi hopefuls. Katsu, who is inexperienced on links courses but comes into the event as the highest ranked player in the world is slowly beginning to hit her straps. Her two under par round today featured three birdies and an eagle to see her reach red numbers for the tournament. Four shots back and playing in the group in front of the leaders she represents a large threat tomorrow.

The other chance tomorrow lies with Munchin Keh who started slowly with bogeys on the 1st and 3rd. Following that she showed her class, tearing up the Paraparaumu Beach links, firing six birdies without blemish, which will no doubt give her a lot of confidence tomorrow if she is to run down her younger sister and Alvarez.

The championship will wrap up at lunchtime tomorrow with the Womens field teeing off at 7:45am followed by the New Zealand Men’s Stroke Play Championship field.
