Alvarez into the lead at the New Zealand Women's Stroke Play

Julianne Alvarez finished strongly in the tough afternoon breeze at the Paraparaumu Beach Golf club to lead the field heading into the weekend at the New Zealand Women’s Stroke Play.

As the wind picked up and the famous Paraparaumu Beach golf club become harder and faster Alvarez hung tough before storming home with birdies on her final two holes to claim the clubhouse lead.

Playing in the final group of the day Alvarez started poorly dropping shots on the 2nd and 3rd holes to drop behind Japanese visitor Nasa Hataoka who had enjoyed the calmer morning conditions to shot 74 and post 2 under for the tournament.

The quality of Alvarez’s play increased as the afternoon winds did too and she made birdies at the 9th and 12th to claim back the lead. A bogey at the 16th was promptly followed by birdies on her last two holes to claim the 36 hole lead.

Earlier in the day Hataoka had her chances to post a good round in the morning conditions but a double bogey on her final hole saw her come back to the field. Prior to that she had made four birdies and two bogeys to take the lead before her mishap on the last.

Her fellow country woman and defending champion Minami Katsu had trouble today on the Paraparaumu Beach golf course’s tough par three holes. A double bogey on the 2nd and a triple bogey on the 16th saw her shoot a two over par 76. Despite her worries today she lies at one over par for the tournament only four shots back from Alvarez and has the ability to claim back to back titles.
