GEARY JOINS HENDRY AT THE TOP

Geary joins Hendry at the Top

On another day of fantastic scoring in benign conditions at the Manawatu Golf Club the field slowly crept into Mike Hendry’s until a birdie on the 18th hole saw him joined at the top by Josh Geary, who fired a superb eight under 64.

Hendry has led since the start on the back of two fine 64’s, however Geary was hot out of the blocks in his chase of the lead today with four birdes in his first four holes. However just as it looked like he would mount a charge he stumbled to make three consecutive bogeys from the eight to the tenth. Standing on the 11th hole Geary had handed Hendry back a large seven shot lead until reeling off five birdies and an eagle in his last eight holes to set up an exciting finish tomorrow.

After his fireworks over the first two days Hendry had to settle for a two under par 70 today matching four birdies with two bogeys.

While Geary and Hendry have moved five shots clear the biggest challenge tomorrow will come from Rotorua professional Peter Lee who roared up the leader board with a bogey free 9 under 63. Each of the four par five holes at the Hokowhitu layout were to Lee’s liking today as he played them in six under par with two eagles and two birdies. Another hot round like todays could see Lee apply the pressure on Geary and Hendry in the final round.

In the Women’s field Pakuranga’s Wenyung Keh will head into the final round with a one stroke led and on the verge of her first Charles Tour title after another quality round today. Keh was all class with four birdies and a solitary bogey in a three under 71 to move to eight under par for the tournament. The challengers are all lining up behind her though, with local Brydie Hodge one back after also signing for a three under 71. Alanna Campbell, Catherine Bell, Munchin Keh and Julianne Alvarez all lie within striking distance in what looks to be a close finish tomorrow.
