Ten players started the Horizon Golf Shoot Out at the Manawatu Golf Club today and after nine exciting holes and six unique chip off’s, Sam An of Auckland was the last man standing to take the winners cheque of $7000.

In the unique format which saw the player with the highest score on each hole eliminated (a chip off was used if any players were tied on the highest score), Mike Hendry, one of the favourites on the day was the first player eliminated on the starting hole.

Following in Hendry’s footsteps were favourites Greg Turner with a bogey on the 11th, Mark Brown losing in a chip off on the 14th and Nick Gillespie with a bogey after hitting his ball out of bounds on the 15th.  The elimination of Gillespie on the 15th was an unlucky blow as he had hardly put a foot wrong until then, registering 3 birdies along the way.

With those four eliminated, Josh Geary from Tauranga looked the punters favourite against unheralded young pros Sam An, Shaun Jones and Dylan Higgins.

After Jones was eliminated on the BMW Hole in one 16th hole, the excitement and level of play stepped up a notch on the 17th hole.

Firstly Higgins slotted his 20ft birdie putt only to be matched by An and then Geary’s 16ft and 14ft efforts respectively. In the ensuing chip off, faced with a difficult chip over sand, Geary and An both hit it inside a foot, a feat which Higgins was unable to match.

Both Geary and An played 18 well and saw their mid-range birdie putts slide by. That set the stage for what the 200 large crowd were waiting for, a chip off for $7,000.

Geary was first to play and his chip didn’t get the check he was after leaving An with a small amount of breathing space to be slightly conservative. The rookie pro collected his nerves and executed the chip well, with his ball settling 4ft from the hole claiming the title of Horizon Shoot Out Champion.

While not an official win, the $7,000 cheque represents the biggest win of An’s short professional career to date and will no doubt fill him with a great deal of confidence when he lines up in the 72 hole Lawnmaster Classic starting at 7:45am at the Manawatu Golf Club tomorrow.
