DAY 3 - 2015 NEW ZEALAND GOLF WOMEN'S SENIOR MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

26/02/2015

DAY 3 REPORT

The top four seeds are through to the semi-finals of the 2015 New Zealand Women’s Senior Match Play Championships, but not without a fight.

Top seed Jill Morgan (Te Awamutu) was 3 down after four holes after Suzette Eastmond (Omaha Beach) made an early charge. Morgan rallied back with a birdie on the par 3 18th (starting hole 10th), then a further birdie on the par 3, 3rd along with pars on the 5th, 6th, and 8th holes to Eastmond’s bogeys, she eventually won 2up.

Morgan had earlier in the week won the 2015 NZ Senior Challenge Cup for the best gross with a round of 72 in the qualifying round. She will now meet her fellow Waikato representative Robyn Pellow, (Ngaruawahia) in the first of the semi-finals tomorrow.

Pellow who has been nursing a swollen knee ‘is saving the best to last’ with a solid round of 76 today to win her match 4/3 against Helen Green from the host club, Hamilton.

With the 2015 Masters Team Championships only weeks away Waikato selectors will be keenly watching this match due to tee off at 9.10am tomorrow.

At the other end of the Division 1 draw, defending champion Brigit Holford (The Grange) also had her work cut out with a very close match against Sheelah Lamb from Matamata.

Like Morgan, Holford was down in the early stages of her match against Lamb, a lower seed. At one stage with only six holes to go, Lamb had the lead, 2up. Holford hung on with a birdie on the par 5, 4th (starting hole 10), followed by pars on the next three holes and another birdie on her 18th hole, the par 5, 9th, to win 2 up.

Holford will now meet Trish McBride from Kawerau. McBride secured her place in the semi’s with a 3/1 win against Jillian Reakes from Pirongia. McBride had an easier battle, taking the lead in the first hole with a par, a lead she never relinquished.

Tomorrow will see all four divisions battle it out in championship, plate and flight semi-finals before finals are played in the afternoon.

Tomorrows closing ceremony is scheduled to commence at 7.00pm with the 2015 trophies being presented by one of New Zealand’s greatest women golfers, Marnie McGuire.

The 2015 tournament is the 67th championship, which in its history has never been staged at the championship Hamilton course of St Andrews. The inaugural championship was staged at Waipukurau, in 1948 with Mrs Mackie the eventual winner.

In more recent times the tournament has been dominated by the talented Southlander Robyn Boniface who was unable to compete this year, and is a three-time winner. Pellow is a two-time winner and Holford the defending champion. Neither, Morgan or McBride have yet to make their claim on this historic piece of silver.
