HOLMAN HANGS ON FOR SENIORS TRIUMPH

The final round of the New Zealand Seniors championship at the Nelson Golf Club proved to be a two horse race between Martin Holman (Christchurch) and defending champion Michael Barltrop (Royal Auckland) with Holman hanging on to win his most important seniors title.

The two players could not be separated through the first eleven holes, until a par, par, bogey run from the 12th to 14th holes which were playing more difficult in the afternoon breeze, were good enough to give Holman a three stroke lead. Although he made two late bogeys, he had the luxury of taking two putts from a short distance on the 18th green in front of many of his peers to win the national title.

Local member Craig Newman completed an excellent tournament but never threatened at any stage in the final round. Down the stretch, when his playing partners Holman and Barltrop were dropping shots, he made solid pars and managed to hold on to the bronze medal position.

The best round of the day belonged to American Rick Woulfe who closed with a four under par 67 to finish in a tie for fourth and easily win the 65-69 age division.

Due to their performance six players earned an automatic place in the New Zealand team to play for the Sanctuary Cove Trophy in July. They were; Michael Barltrop, Reg Fleet (Gulf Harbour), Robbie Bell (Ashburton), Murray Martin (New Pymouth), John Sanders (Christchurch) and Arthur Parkin (Maungakiekie)

The championship featured 145 senior players aged at least 50 years and the announcement of Paraparaumu Beach as next year’s venue was met with much enthusiasm as the tournament goes from strength to strength.

TIE AT THE TOP

The NZ Seniors Championship is poised for an exciting finish with defending champion Michael Barltrop (Royal Auckland) and Martin Holman (Christchurch) leading the way.

Barltrop struggled early and was two over par through 12 holes until he arrived at the 4th tee, his back nine. Birdies at the 4th, 5th, 8th and 9th lifted him back to the top of the leader board and a gutsy 69 which for a moment equalled the best rpund of the tournament.

A few minutes later Martin Holman (Christchurch) signed for a four under par 67 matching his 73 from round one and throwing him in to a tie with Barltrop. Holman’s round was quite different as starting from the 10th tee he birdied the 13th, 16th, 1st and 2nd before making his first and only bogey on the 3rd and closing with a birdie on the 9th.

Local Nelson favourite Craig Newman played in the morning and recovered well from a double bogey on the first hole to return another par round of 71. Only two shots behind Newman will certainly fancy his chances for challenging for the title in the final round.

Four shots from the lead is 2011 champion Murray Martin (New Plymouth) and Australia’s leading senior player Gordon Claney.

Overnight leader Barry Johnston (Clearwater) made a nervous start but played a solid back nine to stay in sixth equal position.

Whilst the event is one overall championship there is always interest in the best players in each of the five age divisions. Newman is the best of the 50-54 group, Barltrop the 55-59, Holman 60-64, Rick Woulfe (Canada) 65-59 and Nelson legend Bruce Stevens in the 70 and over group.

The NZ Seniors Championship is a 54 hole stroke play event for golfers aged fifty and over and concludes on Saturday.

JOHNSTON A SURPRISE LEADER IN NELSON
The New Zealand Seniors Championship got under way on Thursday in beautiful conditions at Nelson Golf Club and the leader board is stacked with past champions and local favourites, however the day one belonged to Clearwater’s Barry Johnston.

Playing in the penultimate group Johnston returned the only sub-par round of the day with a one under par round of 70 which included four birdies and three bogeys. Johnston, who plays off a 4 handicap, outplayed the more illustrious players in the field and has the advantage of playing in the morning field in round two.

There is a four way tie for second.

In benign morning conditions defending champion Michael Barltrop (Royal Auckland) returned a steady par round of 71 which was matched by Olympic hockey gold medallist Arthur Parkin (Maungakiekie). For Barltrop it was his fourth successive par round in this tournament, after winning the 2014 title at Omaha Beach with three rounds of 71. The wind picked up a little in the afternoon but didn’t affect the 2008 and 2009 champion David Burton, and club mate Craig Newman who joined the group on 71.

Fourteen players returned scores of 73 or better, including 2011 champion Murray Martin.

A feature of the event is the 20 players from the Waitikiri Golf Club who have helped to really grow the stature and popularity of this tournament over the last few years. Within their group is a father and son combination, Eric and Mark Elley, and it is believed this is the first time this unique feat has occurred since the tournament started in 1982.

The NZ Seniors Championship is a 54 hole stroke play event for golfers aged fifty and over and concludes on Saturday.
