NORTH ISLAND UNDER 19S: HOSKIN SETS EARLY PACE

15/01/2014

Otago No.1 Laura Hoskin has set the early pace in the North Island Under 19 Championship at the Ngaruawahia Golf Club.

The Arrowtown golfer shot a three-under par 70 to hold a one shot lead over Jocelynn Katu (71) of the Aviation Country Club.

Hoskin was solid throughout the opening round making five birdies and two bogeys in the warm and windy conditions.

Defending Champion Celeste McLean (Manaia) and Hillary O'Connor (Coringa) are in a share of third place after carding rounds of one-under par 72.

The North Island Under 19 championship is an important stepping stone event in the New Zealand Golf pathway with the likes of Phil Tataurangi, Mark Brown and Brad Iles former champions of the event.

A field of 216 golfers is contesting the North Island Men’s and Women’s Under 19 Championships this week in the Waikato.

The entries were so significant in 2014 that, for the first time, two courses are required to stage the championship.
