NZ AGE GROUP CHAMPIONSHIP: GUO AND CLAY SHARE LEAD

5/09/2012

Auckland’s Lita Guo and Wellington’s Te Rongopai Clay share the lead after round one of the New Zealand Age Group Championship at the Mangawhai Golf Club.

Guo and Clay opened with rounds of six over par 78 to lead Imogen Donnelly-Lawrence (Manor Park) and Catherine Bell (Ashburton) who had rounds of eight over par 80 to share third place.

“I had a pretty good day,” said Guo of the Remuera Golf Club.

“I missed a couple of putts but it was a very strong wind and overall I did pretty well, 78 is a pretty good score for a starting round.

“The wind made it very challenging, some holes played really long and others pretty short, but it made the course very fun to play.

“Tomorrow I will look to hit more fairways and get on the green and hopefully putt better.”

The co-leader Clay, from the Titahi Bay Golf Club in Wellington, was content with her start.

“I just tried to slow my swing down and stay straight and it worked well,” she said.

“The wind made all of your approach shots into par fours tougher and all of the par fives were definitely three-shot holes to get there. The greens were pretty fast and they weren’t holding.

“It was a good test out there. I am hoping to play better tomorrow, make less bogeys and hopefully be in a good position for the final round.”
