WEB.COM TOUR QUALIFYING: FOX AND CAMPBELL MISS IN TEXAS

15/11/2014

Ryan Fox’s dream of joining the Web.Com Tour in 2015 is over.

The 27-year-old, who had carded rounds of 72, 71 and 74 to be in a share of 22nd place, needed a strong final round today in Texas to advance to the Final Stage of Qualifying.

Fox delivered a two-under par 70 at the TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney in the final round of the Second Stage of Qualifying to finish two shots outside of the qualifying mark.

The Auckland professional was tied 22nd and needed to finish inside the leading 18 players and ties to advance to the Final Stage for the feeder tour to the PGA Tour.

Fox looked to have blown his chances early. He birdied the second hole before making three bogeys in succession to make the turn in two-over par 38 and be well outside the number.

But he rallied in superb fashion playing the back nine in four-under par 32 to sign for a 70 and had a chance of advancing to the Final Stage. At that stage, Fox was inside the qualifying mark before he was edged out by the other golfers still out on course.

It was a cruel blow for Fox who has been one of the form Kiwi golfers on the PGA Tour of Australasia after winning the Western Australian Open and finishing inside the top-10 at the Perth Invitational.

Meanwhile, Otago pro Thomas Campbell also missed his chance of advancing to the Final Stage of Qualifying for the Web.Com Tour.

Campbell, who began the event with a four-under par 68 to be in a share of the lead, went on to card rounds of 76, 79 and 79 to free-fall down the leaderboard into a share of 45th place.

The 29-year-old from Dunedin, who studied at the University of Minnesota for four years, also needed to finish inside the top 18 players and ties to advance to the Final Stage. He was seven shots off that number.

Wellington pro Gareth Paddison and Waikato pro Mathew Perry also missed advancing as they finished in 66th and tied 68th respectively at the McKinney event.

Kiwi Pro Watch: Lee and Wilkinson in the hunt in Mexico

Kiwi professionals Danny Lee and Tim Wilkinson are in the hunt at the halfway stage of the OHL Classic in Mayakoba on the PGA Tour.

Lee (66, 69) and Wilkinson (68, 67) are in a share of 16th place on a seven-under par total, only five strokes back from the leader, American Michael Putnam on 12-under par.

Lee, who is 76th in the early stages of the Fed Ex Cup, made four birdies and two bogeys in his round two effort at the El Camaleon Golf Club in Mexico to drop nine places down the leaderboard.

While Wilkison, who is currently tied 99th on the season money-list, had five birdies and a bogey in his four-under par 67.

Waikato professional Steven Alker bounced back in round two with a five-under par 66 but still missed the cut by one stroke.
