12/09/2014

Waikato professional Brad Shilton is in a share of second place at the South Pacific Open in New Caledonia.

The former Eisenhower rep, who won the title in 2012 for the biggest win of his career, has carded rounds of 68 and 65 at the Tina Golf Club in Noumea for a nine-under par total at the halfway stage.

Shilton will begin the third round two shots back from Australian Adam Stephens who leads on an 11-under par total. Stephens made five birdies and an eagle – a spectacular two on the par 4 6th which measured 285m – in his seven-under par 64.

Shilton, a former Wairakei Open Champion, had six birdies in a bogey-free display in round two. He will be in the final group heading into the weekend in the tournament that holds a purse of $155,000.

Bay of Plenty professional Jared Pender is also in touch. The big-hitting pro from Tauranga had a five-under par 66 in round two to climb into a share of fifth place.

Two Kiwi amateurs Luke Toomey (Riverside) and Blair Riordan (Takaka), who narrowly missed selection for the Eisenhower team, are also enjoying fine weeks at the South Pacific Open.

Toomey, the New Zealand Stroke Play Champion, has carded rounds of 73 and 64 to be in a share of 10th place while Riordan, the North Island Stroke Play Champion, is also tied 10th on five-under par after signing for rounds of 67 and 70.
