LPGA CHAMPIONSHIP – KO FOUR SHOTS BACK IN NEW YORK

15/08/2014

World No.2 Lydia Ko has made a solid start to the LPGA Championship in New York.

The 17-year-old, who is hoping to become the youngest major golf champion in history, birdied the final hole at the Monroe Golf Club in Pittsford to sign for a two-under par 70.

The four-time winner on the LPGA Tour is in a share of 16th place, four strokes back from American Lexi Thompson and South Korean Meena Lee who opened with rounds of 66 to share the lead at six-under par.

The Pinehurst School Student began on the 10th tee and got off to a blistering start when she was three-under par through her opening seven holes to be in touch with the lead.

But Ko endured an up and down stretch coming home as she made three bogeys and a birdie either side of the turn to drop back into the pack.

The birdie on her final hole was important as it enabled her to keep pace with the low scoring.

If Ko can achieve her first major title this week, she will become the World No.1 as long as Stacy Lewis doesn’t finish solo second in the event. The American opened with a one-under par 71 to be tied 29th.

Ko’s best finish in a major remains her runner-up at the 2013 Evian Championship in France when she was still an amateur.

Her best finish this season, as a professional, in a major championship is a tie for 15th at the U.S. Women’s Open.

Wyndham Championship: Lee off the pace in North Carolina

Meanwhile on the PGA Tour, Danny Lee has got off to a slow start at the Wyndham Championship.

The 24-year-old from Rotorua opened with a three-over par 73 at the Sedgefield CC in North Carolina to be off the pace in a share of 136th place.

Lee began the Wyndham in 109th place on the money-list and is projected to drop six places to 115th.

Lee and compatriot Tim Wilkinson, currently 107th on the Order of Merit, have qualified for the Fed Ex Cup Playoffs which begin next week with the top 125 players from the PGA Tour money-list competing at The Barclays.
