KIWI PRO WATCH: SMAIL FINISHES TIED 13TH IN INDONESIA

Hamilton professional David Smail was the best of the Kiwis at the Indonesian PGA Championship on the OneAsia Tour.

 

 

The 43-year-old carded a four-under par 68 in the final round at the Damai Indah Golf Club to finish in a share of 13th place in the event that was co-sanctioned with the Japan Golf Tour.

Smail, who has played in Japan for the past 16 seasons consecutively, had rounds of 67, 68, 71 and 68 to finish on a 14-under par total, seven shots back from the champion Michio Matsumara.

The former NZ Open Champion, who last won in 2005, earned NZD$19800 for his week in Jakarta.

Michael Hendry, who is playing his second season on the Japan Tour in 2014, finished in a share of 29th place while Gareth Paddison faded from his fast start to finish tied 65th.

Meanwhile over in the States Manawatu professional Tim Wilkinson finished in a share of 62nd place at the Valero Texas Open.

The 35-year-old, who is playing on the PGA Tour for the first time since 2009, carded rounds of 74, 70, 74 and 76 at the TPC San Antonio.

Wilkinson is projected to slip two places to 108 on the Fed Ex Cup Standings.

Compatriot Danny Lee made headlines on day one when he birdied four of his last five holes to claim a share of the lead but he fell apart in the second round.

The former US Amateur Champion carded an 11-over par 83 to miss the cut for a forgettable finish. Lee is projected to slip six places on the Fed Ex Cup Standings to 85.
