Young Joshua Bai from the Akarana Golf Club can now lay claim to being a World Champion after a comprehensive victory in the US Kids Golf World Championships held at the Pinehurst Resort in the United States.

Each year since 2005, Pinehurst and the surrounding community have played host to hundreds of junior golfers from across the globe. The weeklong experience includes a Parent/Child Tournament, Team Challenge, Parade of Nations, Honda Skills Challenge, three rounds of championship play and the Closing Ceremony.

While the famous No2 course where Michael Campbell won the US Open in 2005 doesn’t host one of the age group categories the No 8 and No 9 are included in the rotation where there are thirteen age group categories for boys and girls ranging from under 6 to 12 years of age.

Bai who was playing at the Talamore Golf Club which measured 5521 yards for the championship compiled rounds of 69, 67 and 71 for a nine under par total and a comfortable four stroke victory in the boys 11 year old category.

Bai will be looking to take this form into the upcoming New Zealand Men’s Under 19 Championship in September where he will be one of the favoured players in the Under 13 age group category.

Several other kiwis made the trek to the US to compete in the annual event with Fiona Xu the next best performed with a tied third finish in the Girls 12 years category. Xu finished at one under par six shots behind the leader.
