NEW ZEALAND AGE GROUP CHAMPIONSHIP: ALVAREZ WINS BY THREE AT TEMPLETON

6/09/2013

Wellington No.1 Julianne Alvarez has given the Manor Park Golf Club even more reason to celebrate in their centenary year.

The New Zealand rep carded a one-over par 74 to win the New Zealand Age Group Championship by three shots at the Templeton Golf Club in Christchurch.

The 16-year-old, who won the NZ Amateur Championship in April, to become only the second golfer from Manor Park to have won the title, had rounds of 75, 70 and 74 for an even par total to win from Australian Shelly Shin.

Bay of Plenty golfer Tyla Kingi (73) finished third and Wenyung Keh (77) slipped back to fourth place.

But today was all about Alvarez who continued to show her renewed maturity on the national stage.

“I am pretty happy to have won here,” said Alvarez. “It is good to see that my hard work has paid off.”

She said it was nice to finally win the NZ Age Group title and live up to the hype as the tournament favourite.

“Every tournament is similar and there is always expectation to play well and play to your ability. It was great to win here again.”

The Academy Member at New Zealand Golf was pleased with her mindset in the final round as she added her sixth top-five, and second trophy, of the season.

“I just played the last day as if it was the first day. I wiped the slate clean. I was up against Wenyung [Keh] and I know that she can go deep when she needs to so I had to stay on my game. She threw five birdies at me towards the end so I knew it was never over.”

“But I was only worried about what I was doing though and if I played well then I thought that would be enough.”

Alvarez has been selected to represent New Zealand at the Srixon International Junior at the Maitland Golf Club in Australia from October 1 – 4. She is looking forward to building her international experience.

“I am going to continue with my preparation with some gym work and golf practice and preparing myself mentally as well for playing overseas.”
