19/01/2013

Former US Open champion Michael Campbell is still in contention at the halfway stage Abu Dhabi Championship on the European Tour.

Cambo, who carded a three under par 69 in his first round for 2013 to be in a share of fifth place in the world-class field, backed it up with a one under par 71 in round two to be tied seventh.

He will begin round three, four shots back from England’s Justin Rose who followed his first round 67 with a three under par 69 to lead the tournament by one shot.

It is a continuation of the comeback to form he showed in 2012 where he recorded a third place finish in Portugal and a tie for eighth in Hong Kong,

The eight-time European Tour winner played the front nine in one under par. He lost his way with bogeys on the 13thand 14thbefore finishing with consecutive birdies on 17 and 18 to sign for a 71.

The 43-year-old has fought his way back to his best and is looking for his first victory since the World Match Play at Wentworth in 2005.

Meantime Tiger Woods (72, 75) and Rory McIlroy (75, 75) have both missed the cut in their first event for 2013.
