Luke Toomey 19/04/1993

Waikato No.1 Luke Toomey is a player on the rise in the New Zealand ranks. He underlined his newfound maturity earlier this year when he shot a three-under par 69 in the final round at Hastings to win the New Zealand Stroke Play by two shots.

Toomey opened with a double bogey and then reeled off four birdies in succession to take the advantage in the four round event. Toomey first made the National Academy in 2013 after a run of impressive results. The 21-year-old from the Lochiel Golf Club came close to winning on the Charles Tour when he came up just short at the LawnMaster Classic. He had a putt on the 72nd hole from eight feet which just missed to force a playoff. Earlier in the tournament he held the lead when he shot a nine-under par 63 to break the course record.
Toomey continued his good track record at the Manawatu Golf Club when he shot an unbelievable 11-under par 61 to win the qualifying for the New Zealand Amateur by 11 shots. It was a phenomenal display. The big hitter was consistently excellent in 2013. He also finished runner-up to Brad Hayward at the Taranaki Energy Open (in the amateur ranks).
He carried his local form on to the international stage when he finished tied seventh on his international debut at the Mexican Amateur. He was one of the most exciting talents to come out of the 2013 season and has developed even further with the support of the National Academy.
