Sir Bob Charles Scholarship
Sir Bob Charles is a legendary figure in New Zealand golf being the first of only two “major” winners from these shores. His exploits at the highest level of professional golf have placed him as one of this country's greatest achievers in sport.
Sir Bob's support of New Zealand golf has also been enduring, and since 1986 when he first began his career on the US Senior PGA Tour, he has been donating 1% of his prize money to New Zealand Golf. New Zealand Golf elected to develop the Sir Bob Charles Golf Scholarship, using the monies contributed by Sir Bob, and is proud to be associated with what is an excellent opportunity for young people involved in golf who wish to develop their education.
Sir Bob, recognising that not everyone succeeds at the highest level, wants to provide the opportunity for golfers to gain an ongoing education whilst developing their golfing skills.
The Sir Bob Charles Golf Scholarships provide a chance for individuals in the golf industry to pursue their specific golf educational goals. Although there is no upper age limit on applicants, the scholarship is designed to provide assistance to people starting out or in the early stages of their education or career.
This is available to male or female amateur golfers who wish to become top golfers, but at the same time enable them to continue with some form of education. The scholarship is designed to assist with the costs of this education. Scholarship funds under this category cannot be applied to assist with professional coaching or tournament costs.
Applications for the 2010 Sir Bob Charles Scholarships have now closed. Applications closed on the 31st of December 2009 and the 2010 recipient Duncan Croudis was announced at The Golf Awards in Queenstown during the New Zealand Open.
Applications for the 2011 scholarship are now open and will close 3rd December 2010. The successful recipient will be announced in January 2011.

New Zealand Golf and the Michael Campbell Foundation both share the same ambitions. Their vision is synonymous with excellence and New Zealands leading amateurs now have the opportunity to benefit from the Campbell experience.
The organisations share the vision of seeing more New Zealanders winning at amateur level in turn leading to the domination of international tours. Both wish to see more ‘Michael Campbell moments’ in the future that will drive healthy growth of the sport.
Since 2009 the Michael Campbell Foundation has awarded three New Zealand Golf Amateurs with a special scholarship that takes them overseas to work with Michael and his coaching team. The scholarship provides those lucky enough to be awarded the honour, the opportunity to walk the path of their chosen future. Whilst getting a taste for what their ultimate goal might resemble, will be coached by one of the best teachers in world golf all under the watchful eye of one of New Zealand’s iconic sportsman-Cambo.
New Zealand Golf are overjoyed that Michael has been so generous and inspirational. Applicants will be sourced from three categories:
Category one: from current members of New Zealand Golf’s High Performance Academy.
Category two: From leading New Zealand amateur players currently playing abroad (and therefore falling outside the scope of the High Performance Academy, i.e. young golfers studying overseas)
Category three: Wildcards- amateurs that demonstrate potential but do not fit within either of the two classifications above.
Applicants are screened down to a maximum of ten finalists. A panel consisting of the Chairman and a Trustee from the Board of Michael Campbell Foundation together with New Zealand Golf’s Talent & Coach development Manager then select the finalists. These finalists are then handed over to a scholarship panel including Michael Campbell, who screens the finalists down to three recipients. This judgement is based upon assessment generated by the finalists’ panel, finalists’ CVs and personal interviews with each finalist.
Applications for the 2011 Michael Campbell Foundation Scholarship are now open and will close on Friday 8th April. Successful candidates will be notified by Thursday 14th April and need to be available for an interview with the selection panel on Monday 18th April in Christchurch.
